CD player can’t recognise the presence of a CD, or jumps badly while attempting to play

Likely cause:

Dust/ fluff on the optical system/ laser/ lens.

Solution:

Blast the optics with dry air. This is easy on the ‘clamshell’ or ‘open top’ players but nearly impossible on the ‘drawer’ type
